The unique personal point of view allows the most casual reader to follow Schopf along through his pursuit of a great scientific discovery from his time in undergraduate studies through the analysis of the oldest fossils known to man. The detailed evidence supporting the claims on the age of these fossils and their biological origins are presented in a clear format covering enough detail for the scholar, yet understandable for each person to learn more about these incredible ancient organisms. Schopf uses the book for more than just a platform to describe his own work and the history leading up to that discovery. The purpose of Cradle of Life is for the education of science and scientific theory. Multiple examples are presented in which politics, religion, the media, or personal issues can cause scientists to make false claims, or claims with which they do not have the proper evidence to back up. In the words of Carl Sagan, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." There have been many cases in the young field of paleobiology in which claims have not stood the test of time because of lack of extraordinary evidence. These claims have hindered the field for some time, even decades in some cases. Schopf writes this to provide an example through his career of making an extraordinary claim based on highly detailed and through evidence. This book is greatly encouraging to science as the field of paleobiology progresses as long as careful patience and clear statement of facts are present to ensure that mistakes and claims are made to withstand the trials they will face. William Schopf, a dazzling exploration of how science was able to overcome substantial obstacles to look back to the very edges of the dawn of life on our planet. Schopf, professor of earth sciences at UCLA, is a paleobiologist with a long, impressive resume that includes service as NASA's principal investigator of lunar samples during the golden age of manned moon landings. More significantly, it was Schopf himself who in 1965 was the first to discover Precambrian microfossils of prokaryotic life in stromatolitic sediments in Australia's Apex chert dated to 3.5 billion years ago, the oldest confirmed evidence for life at the time. Because new breakthroughs in this field are rare and the science moves forward at a somewhat glacial pace, Cradle of Life–first published in 1999–remains fresh and fascinating. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. A. C. Latham -- Well written, informative but vague on evolutionary steps : This is a very good read for anyone interested in the first forms of life on this planet. Schopf is not just an expert but a real enthusiast who loves his subject. He gives a clear picture of the exciting discoveries of microbial fossils going back to 3.5 billion years ago - tracing these forward as far as the eukaryotic cells that precede the multicellular organisms of the 'Cambrian explosion'. He is a very convinced neo-Darwinist who therefore glosses over, I feel, many of the real problems that this new knowledge brings to the story of life. There is very poor understanding of how the earliest chains of nucleotides could have become self-replicating RNA and his hopeful explanation of the formation of the first cell walls from soap molecules is highly unconvincing. The fact that the most complex prokaryotes (cyanobacteria) are present in the very earliest fossils goes against the very gradualist evolution scenario that he elsewhere proclaims. The change from asexual mitosis to sexual meiotic division is also assumed to have happened by chance - but is such a complex process that this also did not convince me. The fact that cynanobacteria are still with us and are completely unchanged from those 3.5 billion years old, as well as being highly successful - goes entirely against the idea that higher forms of life evolved because of the need to succeed. The formation in the Cambrian explosion, suddenly, of highly complex multi-celled animals of all the main phyla is not dealt with adequately - even if he is only a micro-palaeontologist. There are too many problems, and despite careful reading of this book I remain convinced that there is good evidence for design in nature. But,as a clearly written text on the latest knowledge the book is invaluable despite these reservations. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2001 )
